The College of Fine Arts and Communications was founded in 1963 the following a reorganization of the College of Fine Arts. James A. Mason served as dean of the college until 1994, when he was succeeded by Bruce L. Christensen. Christensen was succeeded by Newell Dayley who was appointed dean in 2000 and served until 2003. The College of Fine Arts was organized in 1925 with Gerrit de Jong, Jr., as the first dean. He remained dean until 1959 when he was succeeded by Conan Mathews. In 1963 the college became the College of Fine Arts and Communications.
